Expectations versus reality was a common theme that cropped up throughout the process of making "Hijabis Uncovered". Taking inspiration from political satire shows, the members of our team share the reflections and analysis that we uncovered.
Having embarked on my journey as a hijabi recently, I felt that the Hijabis Uncovered project would act as a tool for me to discover more about myself and develop my individuality. I believe this project has highlighted the importance of recognizing how our shared experiences as Muslim women have established a platform for us to grow.
I was really inspired by hijabis I've seen online that made me realise that wearing hijab didn't have to mean sacrificing style and beauty. it was so refreshing compared to how muslim women are depicted in the media and I wanted to explore that dissonance.
As a POC I have been in awe of the growing visibility of black women in social media and the fashion world and this lead me to be curious about women that were creating spaces of visibility for themselves. Hijabi women are claiming their own space and suing their platforms to futher the narrative around modesty and fashion on their own terms and I'm honored to have been a part of that even in the smallest way possible.
